Diagnostics is its own skill — the parts store "free scan" reads codes but doesn't tell you why the code is there. I'll scan, read live data, and walk the actual circuit if I have to. If I can fix it on the same visit, I will. If it needs parts ordered, I'll quote the repair before I leave.

Rare, but it happens with truly intermittent problems. I'll tell you what I checked, what's still possible, and recommend the next step — sometimes that's a shop with specialty equipment.
Can you clear a check engine light?
Yes, but if the underlying problem isn't fixed, the light comes back. I'll diagnose first, fix where I can, and only clear the code once we've actually addressed it.
